Charlize Theron recalls a frightening camping experience involving gunfire that influenced her role in the upcoming Netflix thriller Apex

Theron describes her Apex character, Sasha, as resilient and scrappy, qualities she admires in real life

The actress shared humorous insights about parenting her strong-willed daughters, August and Jackson, on a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce

Charlize Theron is recalling some “scary” camping moments.

The star, 50, exclusively opens up to PEOPLE about the filming process of her new Netflix action thriller Apex, which is set in the Australian outback, at the movie’s NYC premiere. She also remembers one particularly unnerving moment from her own life.

“I like nature. I'm not scared of it [but] I'm not like a crazy camper or anything like that. It's like the scariest,” Theron says at the red carpet which took place at the city's Plaza Hotel.

“I've gone camping back in the day in places that probably, you know, were not the safest, and you'd wake up at 4 a.m. in the morning, and somebody's like shooting a gun right next to you,” she continues.

Mom of two Theron adds that it's terrifying when "a beautiful place turns very scary.”

The star also says she thought about the incident while filming Apex. “You think about that stuff, yeah, yeah,” she says.

Returning to the survivalist thriller movie, which also stars Taron Egerton and is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, Theron describes her character, Sasha, as “scrappy,” adding, “I like scrappy people.”

Asked what inspires her about Sasha, the three-time Oscar winner says, “I guess her tenacity, her grit. She's resilient, she's a true survivor, you know.”

Away from the camera, Theron has recently appeared on Travis and Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast in an episode that dropped on Wednesday, April 22. The star opened up to the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and father of four, Jason about her “hormonal” daughters, August and Jackson.

The Atomic Blonde star adopted Jackson, now 14, in 2012 and her youngest daughter, August, now 11, in 2015.

“They just turn into hormonal nightmares," she jokingly told the NFL brothers of her kids, adding that she gets concerned when her daughters argue.

“Like, they're gonna kill each other because they're both very, very strong. They're not wallflowers, and they're stubborn, and they're just firecrackers.”

She added, "When they love, they love very hard. But when they fight, I'm like, oh my god. Like, am I gonna go to jail? They won't stop.”

Apex will be available on Netflix on April 24, 2026.
